In this test, an HF current is injected into the main supply lines of the test object, which changes the voltage potential of the test object in the same cycle.
The result is a high frequencyE-field between the DUT and the environment that can influence the DUT reaction. The environment of the DUT is not defined and therefore neither is the E-field and its influence on the test object. The measurements would therefore not be reproducible.
The polished steel ball above the test object represents a dominant and reproducible counter-potential to the E-field of the test object and thus enables reproducible measurements. The influence by the undefined environment is greatly weakened.
